Nine of Swords

Oil on Canvas, 18 x 24 in. 2020

“Nine of Swords” references the tarot card the "Nine of Swords" also known as The Lord of Cruelty. The tarot card often represents fear, anxiety, hardship, and trauma. I made this piece during a very difficult time in my life in which I had no one to confide in. What I intended for this piece was an enforced distance while still holding the same intimacy as reading a page of someone’s diary. I know the context of this piece, and the violence it speaks of, but at the time of its creation, I hoped the visual would be coded and only become decipherable to insiders. In a sense, this painting is a piece written in a secret language, one that can remain veiled and illegible to the unwarranted eye.

Infestation

Oil on Canvas, 18 x 24 in. 2022

“Infestation” is a piece that explores the complexities and nuances of domestic abuse. In the foreground, a female figure curls herself into fetal position, hiding her face from the viewer; this is representative of the of how abusive familial relationships can lead to parentification. Poisonous to the touch, the Golden Frog sits menacingly on the back of the figure representing one of the parents within an abusive dynamic. The spiders crawling out of the figure’s open ribs are representative of the other parent. Since childhood, I've stood in the center of my parent’s toxic and codependent relationship. I've attempted to capture this in brutal imagery. I hope the viewer is unable to tell which of the two creatures, or perhaps both, are infesting the girl. Could either be read as protecting her? Is the girl, hollowing out her ribs, in a sense, cradling and protecting the spiders that crawl within her? In some ways, I myself do not know the answer to these questions.

Portrait for Ro

Oil on Canvas, 18 x 24 in. 2022

My favorite commission to date. It was an honor being given the opportunity to revive someone's mother through a portrait. The original image the client provided was a washed out sepia-toned photo.. Coordinating with the client, I slowly pieced the colors together, bringing Ro's mother to life.

Gluttony/Charity I

Acrylic on Mixed Media Paper, 8.5 x 11 in. 2021

This is my take on one of the seven deadly sins, gluttony, and its contrasting capital virtue, charity. I decided not to specify which of the pieces is gluttony and which is charity because either one could be interpreted as such depending on how one looks at it. By digging out one's innards, is this an act of indulgence or is it an act of sacrifice.  Perhaps they're both one and the same.

Baby Waters Plant

Acrylic on Mixed Media Paper, 11 x 17 in. 2022

During the better years. When I had first arrived to America. Before the financial pressure. Before the fighting. There was nothing to worry about. Just a kid wearing batman slippers and watering the plants that lined the apartment steps.
